Canadian violinist Paul Medeiros completed his Bachelor of Music in performance at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada under the tutelage of Professor Philippe Djokic. He won on two occasions the Dalhousie “Concerto Night” competition, performing Maurice Ravel’s concert piece “Tzigane” (2008) and Tchaikovsky’s “Violin Concerto” (2010) with the Dalhousie Symphony Orchestra. Paul appeared with the Dalhousie Chamber Orchestra, performing Mendelssohn’s “Concerto in d minor for Solo Violin and Strings” (2008), and Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” (2009). He is notably the recipient of the 2006 Ramon Hnatyshyn Foundation Award (orchestral instrument), a Canadian national prize awarded annually to one young artist who shows exceptional talent and promise for a successful career. Paul has toured with Canadian stars Anne Murray, Sarah Slean, Divine Brown, Paula Cole and MIR. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra from 2003-07 and has performed often with Symphony Nova Scotia.
Since moving to the Netherlands in September 2010, Paul has performed with orchestra Ostravská Banda (Czech Republic), the Paradiso Orchestra (comprised of members of the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra), and Dutch jazz/pop star Wouter Hamel at Uitmarkt in Amsterdam. He also worked with the Asko|Schoenberg ‘Ligeti Academy’ ensemble for their 2010-11 season. Paul is the violinist of “Woloshyn Quartet and Trio” and is active in the new music scene in Holland. He has also a special interest in Dutch chamber music works from the last century up to those of today’s active composers. With cellist Doris Hochscheid and pianist Frans van Ruth, Paul presented works by Jan Brandts Buys, Martijn Padding, and Jeff Hamburg in a series concerts throughout Amsterdam. Paul completed his Master in Music in June 2012 with an indepth study of the Franco-Belgian violin tradition of the 19th century. During his degree, he studied with professors Cornelius Koelmans and Lex Korff de Gidts at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
Currently, Paul is privileged to be working with pianist David Herman on a programme of sonatas ranging from Beethoven to composers the mid twentieth century. He is a member of the Laurenscantorij Orchestra in Rotterdam and performs with Continuo Rotterdam and other ensembles in South Holland. Paul is a violin teacher at De Vioolschool in Haarlem and is currently taking students.
